In this newsletter we introduce you to our colleague in France, Anne Richard, founder, author & curator of HEY! Modern Art & Pop Culture. In 2023, she invited 30 international ceramic sculptors to HEY! CÉRAMIQUE.S her latest and current exhibition on view in Paris at La Halle Saint Pierre Museum. A specialist known for discovering new genres, graphic art and pop surrealists, Anne was inspired to curate exhibitions that highlight figural sculpture in ceramic media.

Two ambitious 2022 exhibitions Anne curated introduced internationally known sculptors from Ferrin Contemporary. HEY! LE DESSIN featured recent works by Sergei Isupov and Jason Walker in Paris and the exhibition Esprits Libres at La Fondation d’Enterprise Bernardaud in Limoges featured new works by Crystal Morey and Mara Superior. The three artists featured in HEY! CÉRAMIQUE.S are Chris Antemann, Crystal Morey, and Mara Superior.

Each of the HEY! exhibitions present multiple works by the artists introducing them to new audiences.They are each documented by extraordinary, fully illustrated publications accompanied by commissioned essays. In the current edition, Maria Porges has written about Crystal Morey, and Lauren Levato Coyne about Mara Superior.

MEET THE HEY! TEAM

ANNE RICHARD
Author, publisher, curator, founder of HEY! Modern Art & Pop Culture

Anne Richard has been working in the art world under three pseudonyms (Anne & Julien, Anne de HEY!, Rosita Warlock) since 1986. Her knowledge of pop subcultures, as well as a solid involvement in alternative arts, have made her a key player in the cultural landscape, thanks to her national and international achievements. In 2010, she co-founded the multidisciplinary structure HEY! modern art & pop culture, which she has directed ever since.

ZOÉ FORGET
Photographer, Projects and Development Manager

Zoé Forget has been a member of HEY! modern art & pop culture since 2012. Initially a photographer, she is now also in charge of publications and exhibitions curated by Anne Richard. A graduate in photography from ENS Louis Lumière, she also holds a doctorate in Aesthetics, Science and Technologies of the Arts and is a lecturer at Paris 8 University. In parallel, she has been developing a personal photographic practice, focusing in recent years on hair and femininity.

A JOURNEY IN CERAMICS

NORTH ADAMS — Sometimes, the only way to move forward is to look back.

Leslie Ferrin, director of Ferrin Contemporary, at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art is doing just that with “Are We There Yet?” It’s an exhibition that is one-part retrospective, one part celebration. It’s a show about evolution, of transition.

It’s an introspective show, for Ferrin, who after 40-plus years in the ceramics market is pondering the next phase of Ferrin Contemporary.

Chris Antemann’s work “Kissing Flora”, straight from the artist’s studio, will be part of the yearly fundraiser for The Archie Bray, in Helena MT.

Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts (The Bray) was founded at the foothills of the Montana Rockies in 1951 by entrepreneur, brickmaker, and avid arts patron Archie Bray, who intended it to be a place to “make available for all who are seriously interested in the ceramic arts, a fine place to work.” The primary mission is to provide an environment and connection with other serious artists that stimulates creative work in ceramics.

Located on the site of the former Western Clay Manufacturing Company, the 26-acre historic brickyard campus has more than 17 buildings, including a 12,000-square-foot resident artist studio facility, a new education and research facility, multiple sales and exhibition galleries, renovated administrative offices, and a facility for ceramic retail and manufacturing. The property is open to artists, students, gallery visitors, and ceramic supply customers, as well as the general public for classes, gallery visits, retail activity, self-guided tours, and structured group visits.

People interact with food on varying levels. Some of us grow or gather it; more of us buy it. We transform it by cutting, cooking, and dressing it with spices, marinades, and garnishes. We use food as an intermediary to connect with others through holiday meals, business lunches, dates, and more.

Featuring more than 100 works ranging from drawings, paintings, photographs, prints, sculptures, and ceramics by 38 artists such as John Baldessari, Enrique Chagoya, Alex Katz, Alison Saar, Lorna Simpson, Andy Warhol, and four Oregon-based artists, Katherine Ace, Chris Antemann, Malia Jensen, and Sherrie Wolf, The Art of Food showcases how some of the most prominent artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have considered this universal subject. Organized thematically, it uses an artistic lens to examine the subject of food beyond its purpose as body fuel.

When art becomes epicurean, voracious, pie-eyed with the pleasures of the palate—inventing dishes, desserts, pieces montées or banquet scenes—sinking its teeth into an examination of our relationship with food (guilty, sensual, problematic)—we have Céramiques gourmandes, an exhibition cooked up by the Fondation Bernardaud, featuring fourteen international artists with a taste for ceramic: the crème de la crème!

Fired clay and fine fare have long been companions. Gustatory pleasure has inspired artists in every era: what we eat says so much about humankind, its environment and its excesses. The feasts we see here are technical feats, to be savored visually, virtually. Like a mouthwatering promise. You can almost hear the “mmmm”s, “yum”s, and “more”s.

In the 18th century, during the vogue for naturalism, ceramicists played with trompe l’oeil. Fantasies in faience and porcelain, decorated plates or trick displays, were wildly popular through Europe—England, Hungary, Germany, and France. There were reproductions of radishes, artichoke quarters, and hard-boiled eggs, sometimes doused in mayonnaise. Kilns yielded compotiers full of olives and bouchées à la reine. There were terrines in the form of pheasants, ducks, roosters; plates disguised as hearts of lettuce or bunches of asparagus; bonbonnières as lemons. Bestiary and kitchen garden were called upon to decorate festal tables.

Delectation is always a question of taste. Gluttons are scourged; gourmets’ refinement encouraged. What we eat reveals what we are. And in our consumer societies, now grown obese, the question of food is at the heart of sanitary, political, and ecological issues.
