MARA SUPERIOR IN MUSEUMS

In 2018, through the generous support of the Kohler Foundation, gifts of art by Mara Superior were made to fifteen museums throughout the USA.

This generous gift has opened opportunities for scholarship and public exhibitions. Several museums are currently showing works they received in this generous gift and plans are underway for a comprehensive career survey of the two artists’ works at the Racine Art Museum in Wisconsin.

Hood Museum of Art , Hanover, NH

Dartmouth now has a beautiful structure for displaying art—everything from Japanese netsuke to enormous contemporary paintings look great in our new galleries. With Art for Dartmouth: Celebrating the 250th, the Hood Museum has sought to channel the bounty of goodwill that made the building renovation possible into renewed enthusiasm for the art collection at the heart of the museum. As part of this initiative over the past few years, the Hood Museum has received numerous gifts of true significance to the collection. Many of these will be featured throughout the fall of 2019 to celebrate the continuing passion of Dartmouth for the arts and of our alumni for their beloved college.

Mark Shapiro

Handmade pottery exploded in America after WWII. Studio potters, in dialogue with clay and fire, produced objects that embodied their unique individual voices, while serving as vessels for everyday sustenance. Studio pots bring the sublime to the daily activity of eating and drinking. This talk will explore how the Donald Clark Collection illuminates the rise of the Studio Pottery movement as well as pottery’s dynamic presence in the local culture of the Connecticut River Valley.

Presented by Mark Shapiro, potter, writer, mentor, director of Apprenticelines, and founding member of POW! (Pots on Wheels)

Galerie Magazine: Patriotic Passions & Mara Superior profile

Galerie Magazine: Patriotic Passions & Mara Superior profile

Galerie Magazine: Patriotic Passions & Mara Superior profile

Mara Superior featured in GALERIE Magazine

“Patriotic Passions”  by author Suzy Slesin features Superior’s important commission, “The Pursuit of Happiness,” based on the principles of democracy for a prominent New York private collection.

“Mara Superior’s pieces are vessels of memory, powerful forms filled with remembrance of things past. They are commemorative icons expressing a hieratic spiritual quality that calls for ceremonial placement In the environment. The content of the drawings is contemplative and complex, the use of words gives clues to the paradox being explored.” … “Superior’s work is firmly grounded in the ceramic tradition; the ancient Greeks, too, decorated their ceremonial pots with narrative drawings. The fascinating physical beauty of glazed porcelain, with its copper-red blushes and floating cobalt blues, is of central value. They could not exist with the same impact in any other material. They are about ceramic art. The quality and content of the painting conjures memories of illuminated manuscripts and small botanical studies. There is a very personal and idiosyncratic quality in Superior’s work that co-exists with great strength and dignity. A unique freshness emerges from the artist’s almost cloistered, confident, personal vision.” — Angela Fina, American Ceramics Magazine Review
