Each item depicts Peter’s large-scale ceramic work, “A Familiar Kind of Riddle”, originally shown at Ferrin Contemporary in 2019. Now on view as part of the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts Foundation Collection.

If you attended our virtual artist talk with Linda Sikora and Mark Shapiro this past Wednesday, you may have caught a glimpse of these gorgeous jars gracing your screens. If not, here’s a closer look!

Linda often incorporates ceramic “sprig” details on her jars, which are created by placing clay or slip into a mold, removing the form, and applying it to the surface of the clay body. The result is both elegant and playful. Come get an even closer look in person before the closing reception on June 8th from 5-7pm!

ICAF 2023 | Ferrin Contemporary returns to the International Ceramic Art Fair for the third year at the Gardiner Museum from June 8 to 18, featuring artwork by Judy Chartrand, Courtney M. Leonard, and Crystal Morey.

We applaud the Gardiner for building this international program that takes over the museum with a fair, exhibition and symposium over 10 days in June.

Thank you curator, Susan Cross for bringing “Ceramics in the Expanded Field” to @massmoca - this is the last weekend to see the extraordinary exhibition featuring eight artists “who are changing the way we think of clay”.

We took one last walk through together reflecting on the process she went through to select 8 artists, discussing the evolution of their work and careers, recognizing the point in time it represents, and remembering the impact of the pandemic on this ambitious exhibition and the artists who were creating during such a challenging time. For the thousands of visitors who were drawn to see it - artists, curators, cultural tourists, media professionals - and for those of us at nearby @ferrincontemporary - we can attest to the success of the show’s premise - changing the way we all think of clay.

It is with much appreciation to Susan and @massmoca for the opportunities it has provided us to debate and share ideas about clay, ceramics, sculpture, installation and the expanding field where clay has led us. More to come …

As we enter our fifth decade, our gallery program is celebrating with a year of highlights featuring new and important works by gallery artists from notable exhibitions.

We invite you to join us as we document and explore our history spanning multiple gallery locations, involving hundreds of artists, and consider the legacy represented by thousands of unique artworks that have passed through our hands.

Paul Scott had a tremendous year of traveling exhibitions and press for his ongoing, multi-form body of work known as New American Scenery. Currently on view at Ferrin Contemporary in North Adams is a selection of Scott's work focusing on new work - BROKEN TREATIES and VIEWS OF NEW YORK.

"The artwork making up New American Scenery is a synthesis of print, collage, and ceramic form. A number of works are from small series, others are individually collaged. The nature of their 'confections' means that all items are unique," writes Scott.

Opening April 22 | LINDA SIKORA: Darkening Ground | Ferrin Contemporary is pleased to present artist Linda Sikora and her new exhibition DARKENING GROUND, a poetic and conceptual look at forms, vessels, and other ceramic gestures. Sikora uses three distinct visual categories—woodgrain, blackware, and redware - Ground I, Ground II, and Ground III. In this, Sikora is thinking about the dark as a generative space and time; a landscape for internal, interpersonal, and cultural constraints and realities to shift and realign.

We will be sharing much more with you in the coming weeks. For now, here is Linda with part of her Woodgrain Series followed by some sneak peaks at the remarkable texture she’d achieved in this work. We have some of the exhibition now on preview in the gallery, including seven of these incredible pieces. Come see for yourself!

We are so pleased to see Courtney M. Leonard's work BREACH: Logbook 21 | NEBULOUS now on view with a public program taking place TONIGHT! This work was shown for the first time at Ferrin Contemporary 2021 in Melting Point and acquired by RISD Museum.

Melting Point was a collaboration between Ferrin Contemporary in North Adams, MA on the MASS MoCA campus and Heller Gallery, located in the Chelsea Art District of New York City. The co-curators and gallery directors are renowned specialists in their fields, Leslie Ferrin (ceramics) and Katya Heller (glass).

ANINA MAJOR: RISD TODAY / FERRIN 2020

Our NATURE/NURTURE exhibition was organized to celebrate Women's Month in 2020 and the theme that year that commemorated earning the right to vote and was part of a group of exhibitions and symposium scheduled for March 20, 2020. The gallery was closed, events were cancelled, the exhibition extended until we could reopen in June. This exhibition became a catalyst for celebrating the work by the diverse group of women artists and was eventually widely seen in a series of digital programs that brought us together during that challenging time and launched zoom. Anina Major was invited to Ceramics in the Expanded Field and is on view through April 10th at MASS MoCA and work from Nature/Nurture was acquired by RISD Museum. Tune into the talk TONIGHT!

Thanks to @peterpincusporcelain for sharing good times! It’s great to see the Pincus family on a field trip to view Peter's work currently on view in Chromania at Everson Museum of Art.

This series was created and shown at Ferrin Contemporary in 2020 for his solo show "Art in the Age of Influence | Peter Pincus - Sol Lewitt.” Through a generous donation, the works were acquired and here we are, three years later. They make a perfect fit for the Everson's current exhibition on view through May 7, 2023.

Art in the Age of Influence: Peter Pincus | Sol LeWitt, featured new works by Peter Pincus inspired by three of Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings on permanent display at MASS MoCA, numbers 340 and 289, as seen first-hand in Sol LeWitt: A Wall Drawing Retrospective at MASS MoCA. Using color theory and formulaic design patterns as points of departure, Pincus creates brightly colored vessels and expansive tile murals. Inspired by Sol LeWitt’s distinctive style, this body of work takes on his influence in their vibrant patterns and forms. LeWitt’s Wall Drawing #422 specifically relates to Pincus’ exhibition centerpiece, a series of 15 large-scale columns that carry
colors across the surface of each form which create a large-scale painting when aligned together.

Raymon Elozua: STRUCTURE & DISSONANCE, published by the Everson Museum of Art on the occasion of the artist's most-recent exhibition, spans three decades of Elozua's trans-disciplinary works. From elegiac photos of decaying Borscht-belt bungalows to collections of cast-off tools through to his technically complicated but visually arresting sculptures, Elozua looks deeply at his surroundings, his landscape, to highlight America's industrial past.

Designed to reflect the concepts in the exhibition, this perfect-bound catalog features dozens of full-color images and thoughtful essays by three incredible, and very different, writers.

Join us to celebrate the release of the catalog for Raymon Elozua: Structure/Dissonance. Elozua will be joined by the three writers who shaped the catalog, Maria Porges, Thyrza Nichols Goodeve, and Garth Johnson, exhibition curator. Each writer will reflect on the exhibition and share some of their insights about Elozua’s work.

This is love.

We’ve had a steady stream family and old friends visiting this winter. June is turning 93 in March and everyone is coming to spend time with her. We’re sorting photos, looking at paintings and sharing memories and trying to make the right decisions about her health care. In the meantime, love is the best drug and there’s no shortage.

"Eva XV" is Cristina Córdova's newest work made for Figuring Space at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, PA on view through April 16.

IN HER OWN WORDS:

I have been sculpting my daughter since she was 9. This version of Eva, at 15 years old, is unglazed and finished with burnished earth pigments from the island of Puerto Rico mixed with casein, lime, and oxides. They came specifically from two areas, one in Fajardo near the coast, where the rainforest is, and one from Orocovis in the mountainous center. Written on her back are the words “de monte y mar” ( “from mountain and sea” ) in gold, a phrase from the song Verde luz by El Topo (Antonio Cabal Vale), which became a symbol of national Puerto Rican pride and an anti-colonialist anthem.

In my practice, the image of Eva is the embodiment of change and possibility. It speaks to the inevitability of transience and the inherited threads of code that perpetuate both genes and identity. This piece seeks to perform both as a symbol and a relic by holding in its materiality a part of the Island that has thematically bound this whole series through the years, exploring the riches and vulnerabilities of this small Caribbean nation that is my home.

Oh hello there - When the soft morning light shine

Oh hello there - When the soft morning light shines in the window of the live/work building … I paused a moment to savor the connection these works provide me to the wonderful artists we work with as we plot out our plans for 2023 via virtual studio visits via zoom . Working from home has its benefits, one of them is seeing the beautiful artwork shown by @ferrincontemporary in the seasonal gallery space at @projectart01026 in Cummington. We don’t get many visitors this time of year but if someone happens to stop by or is traveling through … I’ll make you a fresh cup of coffee and you’d get a tour of our library, office, studios and the seasonal gallery.
