This exhibition is full of vivid images portraying birds in colour-saturated settings where they overlap complex fragmentary backgrounds, many derived from engravings and textiles. The rich mash-ups of visual ideas on the backgrounds are playfully and skillfully rendered using meticulous brushstrokes often suggestive of those industrial process

“I live in a small rural town settled in the 1700’s by English colonists on the land of the Indigenous people, the Norwottucks. Located at the Western end of Hampshire County in the foothills of the Berkshires, an area known as the Hilltowns, we are about 110 miles west of Boston and 180 miles North of New York City. As director of Ferrin Contemporary, from where I sit in my office, Australia is half a world away. Yet, as I look at images of works in this exhibition, I vividly recall my own residency and research in the place where these pieces have their genesis – Adelaide, South Australia. 

The journey that brought me to Adelaide began in the summer of 2006, the year we established Project Art, a ceramic focused residency initiative located in an old historic river mill we had renovated on Main Street in Cummington, a small New England village. Stephen was well known to us through his exhibitions at art fairs, museums and galleries in the US – and he was one of the first guests at Project Art.”

Stephen Bowers discusses his ceramic artwork, the inspirations and methods of production. In this exhibition A Conference of Birds, Stephen has created a ‘flock’ of ceramic plates depicting birds derived from historical illustrations, which were often completed from museum specimens. A focus for Stephen in this exhibition was to achieve a background of even saturated colour, which is a difficult feat to achieve. Certain plates break up the colour through the use of patterning or feature a sunburst effect, similar to that found on guitars. The plates are further adorned with roundels of patterns, looking to designs by English artists William Morris, a major figure of the Arts and Crafts movement of the 19th century and William Kilburn, a leading designer of the 18th century. This use of patterning explores the notion of patterns-in-nature and nature-in-pattern and how we appropriate nature, as well as speaking to Stephen’s environmental concerns, the fragments reflecting the disconnection between humanity and the natural world.

ABOUT STEPHEN BOWERS


Stephen Bowers (b.1952, Sydney, lives and works in in Norwood, South Australia) is a self-taught artist working in ceramics- often focusing on strikingly decorative textiles, wallpapers, comic strips, natural history illustration found within the imagery of his childhood in the mid-1970’s. Close observation of his often seemingly innocent decorations of cockatoos, kangaroos, and willow patterns, reveals subtexts of irony, commentary, and social observation, inviting viewers to look beyond the bravura of the surface to discover a complex and layered world.

Bowers has participated in numerous international exhibitions within Australia and overseas, including the UK, Norway, Italy, Denmark and China and here in the states. His work is included in numerous permanent collections, including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Peabody Essex Museum (Salem, MA), Brooklyn Museum of Art, (NY, NY), National Museum of Art Architecture and Design, (Oslo, Norway), Los Angeles County Museum of Modern Art, (LA, CA), Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, (Launceston, Tasmania)  Museum of International Ceramic Art, (Denmark), Australian National Gallery, (Canberra, Australia), Powerhouse Museum, (Sydney, Australia) National Museum of History, (Taipei Taiwan), Parliament House, (Canberra Australia), among many others.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION


In 2017, twenty contemporary artists were invited to respond to and produce new works that reference the art, objects, and social history of The Frick’s collections. 

Many contemporary artists are breathing new life into the ceramic medium by reviving and reinvigorating age-old concepts. This reinvention is distilled into the use of 18th-century processes and techniques to create new motifs and the depiction of stories inspired by history — often with a commentary or critique on modern society.

This topic is particularly relevant to the current state of the ceramics and museum field as it answers the questions of how history meets contemporary. How can artists draw on the rich artistic traditions of ceramic history while reinvigorating their relevance in a society that prizes the contemporary? Likewise, how can museums use contemporary ceramic art to illuminate and reinvigorate historic collections? The Frick Pittsburgh is committed to using the voices and artworks of contemporary artists to meaningfully engage our audience and our collections with issues and ideas relevant to the present day. Revive, Remix, Respond is an exciting opportunity to continue that dialogue.

Organized by Dawn Reid Brean, Associate Curator of Decorative Arts at The Frick Pittsburgh with Leslie Ferrin of Ferrin Contemporary, the museum has invited artists to submit work that is inspired by, responds to, or relates to historic ceramics in The Frick Pittsburgh’s permanent collection. Highlight’s from the museum’s collection include Clayton, the historic Gilded Age home of industrialist and art collector Henry Clay Frick and its impressive array of fine and decorative arts objects; 18th-century Chinese porcelains purchased by Frick from the collection of J. P. Morgan; and 18th-century French painting and decorative arts collected by Frick’s daughter, Helen Clay Frick.

The exhibition will consider the sources of inspiration shaping ceramics today and ways to keep clay vital in museums, schools, and artistic communities. These ideas directly relate to the organizing theme of NCECA 2018, CrossCurrents: Clay and Culture.

This group exhibition examines the contemporary artistic interest in repaired ceramics. It focuses on materially related forms and graphic material by leading contemporary artists who exploit and explore the surrounding issues of conservation, restoration, over-consumption, reuse, and recycling.

“Before the advent of modern glues, broken ceramics or glass objects were drilled, wired, stapled or riveted together, textiles used to be darned or patched. Home-made or improvised ‘make do and mend’ repairs were made to a loved plate or jug and finer variations of these techniques used by serious conservators. The preciousness of these intimately repaired objects faded with time and in conservation circles practices which interfered with the ‘integrity of the object’ became actively discouraged and disapproved. A few years ago, in spite of their beauty, rivets in plates and wired handles hugely devalued a piece of antique tableware. In some museum collections even the evidence of a staple or riveted repair would be removed and hidden if new conservations took place.

“In more recent times, as we struggle to come to terms with our over consumption of finite resources, the concept of re-cycling has become a central tenet of modern life. There is an increasing interest for crafted, restored, once loved objects so that the obviously repaired,‘traditional’ processes again appear beautiful, functional and intriguing. Whilst their display is not yet common in our public museums, private collections and interests are building. Enthusiast Andrew Baseman has a comprehensive archive of beautifully repaired glass, and ceramic objects, which he makes available to wider public though his wonderful blog.

“For many artists, re-cycling and reuse has long been a natural part of practice; as well as ecological soundness, trash is generally cheap (if not free). Existent, damaged worn or broken objects carry messages, they have already had a life and carry evidence of their journey in material fabric. This realized physicality can be used or exploited in aesthetic form, as conceptual device or collateral evidence. Discarded graphic material has long been used in collage and more recently material from industrial archives are also being used to create new iterations.”

This group exhibition brings together work by several top ceramic artists represented by Ferrin Contemporary. Included will be pieces by Stephen Bowers, Claire Curneen, Steven Young Lee, Frances Palmer, Paul Scott, Bonnie Smith, Vipoo Srivilasa, Mara Superior, and Kurt Weiser. Form and surface merge in various constructions embodying elements of the human form, of animals, and of abstracted thought. Economic conditions and technological advances have caused a dramatic shift in the way contemporary ceramics are conceived, designed, produced, and marketed. Ceramic Top 40 is an exhibition that emerged from the need to document this defining time in contemporary ceramics. Taking a snapshot of this pivotal transition provides a look back at recent history, an understanding of these forces of change, and a glimpse into the future of ceramic art.

This survey exhibition features work by individual artists, collaborators, and design partners who are working on the cutting edge of current processes, ideas, and presentation concepts in conceptual utilitarian and sculptural ceramics. They are responding to the external forces of a changing world and, in turn, shaping those influences.

The exhibition ‘Horizon – Landscapes, Ceramics and Print’ is a visual narrative, illustrating the journey of landscapes, images and patterns through differing media to their realisation on the blue, black, pink, white tableware of The National Museum’s Decorative Arts Collection.

Woven into the display of historical ceramics (including objects from Egersund, Rörstrand, Spode, Arabia) are etchings, engravings and lithographs, as well as objects made by contemporary artists who appropriate this historical genre to observe, record, comment and re-animate. The result is an unexpected journey through cultures, politics, histories and geographies – one that invites us to see a whole group of objects in a new way.
