Beatrice Wood’s use of lustre glazes as a primary surface decoration enhanced her myriad of forms with an amazing iridescence, particularly notable on Chalice and Plate forms (like the pieces featured below) which are a signature of and now symbol for the artist herself.

Beatrice Wood (1893–1998) lived a long artistic life and is associated with the Avant Garde Dada movement. She began working in ceramics in the 1930s mastering and producing lusterware as well as narrative figures and wall tiles, loosely formed and humorous in subject matter.

“POISE explores the tension between acts of labor and collapse, between precision and failure.  It is a meditation on entropy that uses Gothic cathedrals as a foil to examine the dichotomy of beauty and loss. For this exhibition Johnson has created a series of highly organized architectural forms based on the floor plans of historic cathedrals. These forms are distorted and deconstructed under the weight of the glaze in an attempt to find virtue in brokenness.” — Peter Christian Johnson

“In the kiln, the works melt, crumpling into themselves. The ceramic grid is unable to support its own weight, and that of the heavy, glassy, colored material on top. By the time the piece is fully fired, it seems on the verge of total collapse, a few degrees of heat away from becoming a heap of slag. And that, of course, is just how Johnson wants it.”

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION


KNOW JUSTICE presents a two-person show by Justin and Brooke Rothshank focusing on American politics, the Supreme Court, and presidential history. Brooke’s miniature watercolor portraits are complemented by Justin’s decal-printed tableware.

“We believe that artwork and creativity are a catalyst for social change and economic improvement as well as enhancing everyday lives with beauty. Art gives a voice to the voiceless, enables self understanding, and provides a window into other cultures. These are among the reasons we have chosen to pursue lives as working artists.”

“We’ve grown up and live in a Mennonite community where simplicity, functionality, craftsmanship, and knowledge have been valued and taught. These values have shaped our personal and professional lives. At times, its been difficult to see where fine art and craft fit within this context, but these have also felt like important themes to fall back on.”

“This show is about a general introduction of the Supreme Court Justices, and our country’s long history of elected government leadership. The supreme court has shaped the laws of our country for generations. Perhaps more now than ever before the court has become part of the context of political and social conversation. Knowing these leaders, how they lean politically, who appointed them, and what they stand for is a way to start a conversation about how justice is shaped in our country.

Our pots and paintings are influenced by our own research, and also by the framework in which we live. They are distinctly American, but shaped by our awareness of a larger world view.”

This group exhibition examines the contemporary artistic interest in repaired ceramics. It focuses on materially related forms and graphic material by leading contemporary artists who exploit and explore the surrounding issues of conservation, restoration, over-consumption, reuse, and recycling.

“Before the advent of modern glues, broken ceramics or glass objects were drilled, wired, stapled or riveted together, textiles used to be darned or patched. Home-made or improvised ‘make do and mend’ repairs were made to a loved plate or jug and finer variations of these techniques used by serious conservators. The preciousness of these intimately repaired objects faded with time and in conservation circles practices which interfered with the ‘integrity of the object’ became actively discouraged and disapproved. A few years ago, in spite of their beauty, rivets in plates and wired handles hugely devalued a piece of antique tableware. In some museum collections even the evidence of a staple or riveted repair would be removed and hidden if new conservations took place.

“In more recent times, as we struggle to come to terms with our over consumption of finite resources, the concept of re-cycling has become a central tenet of modern life. There is an increasing interest for crafted, restored, once loved objects so that the obviously repaired,‘traditional’ processes again appear beautiful, functional and intriguing. Whilst their display is not yet common in our public museums, private collections and interests are building. Enthusiast Andrew Baseman has a comprehensive archive of beautifully repaired glass, and ceramic objects, which he makes available to wider public though his wonderful blog.

“For many artists, re-cycling and reuse has long been a natural part of practice; as well as ecological soundness, trash is generally cheap (if not free). Existent, damaged worn or broken objects carry messages, they have already had a life and carry evidence of their journey in material fabric. This realized physicality can be used or exploited in aesthetic form, as conceptual device or collateral evidence. Discarded graphic material has long been used in collage and more recently material from industrial archives are also being used to create new iterations.”

FAMILY AFFAIR is a show of porcelain work by the three members of Isupov-Pärnamets family. Five-year-old Roosi Isupov and her parents, Sergei Isupov and Kadri Pärnamets, spend half their year in Estonia and half in the US. They speak Russian, Estonian, English, and a visual language rich with complex imagery. Their work, spoken in a universal language of art, reveals courageous inquiries into what it is to be human — intense explorations of self, relationship, and family. This is a show of their most recent work  produced during the last seven months at Project Art in Cummington, MA, USA.

MADE IN CHINA reveals a dynamic relationship — with appropriation and collaboration occurring in both directions.

Marked by ever-increasing cross-cultural collaboration, this contemporary ceramics movement emerging from China is urging a re-definition of today’s export ware. With increasing frequency, western artists are traveling to China to produce ceramic work using traditional Chinese methods. Exhibitions in the United States, Australia, and Europe are bringing forward a new generation of export ware. In the summer of 2014, Leslie Ferrin travelled to Hong Kong, Chongqing, Jindezhen, and Shanghai to explore this growing cultural exchange. She participated in and lectured at workshops, visited galleries and museums, and toured studios where western artists work in collaboration with skilled Chinese artisans.

In this exhibition, Ferrin brings together work that reveals the essential aspects of contemporary ceramics currently coming out of China.

“After my visit to China, it was clear that this growing movement of western artists engaging with Chinese artisans to provide works for international markets was urging a contemporary re-definition of export ware. It is a dynamic relationship with appropriation and collaboration occurring in both directions, and we are fortunate that we will be able to truly explore the relationship, multiple exhibitions over the coming year.”– Leslie Ferrin

Sponsored as a guest lecturer by the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Ferrin traveled to China in June and July 2014 with the aim of gaining a greater understanding of the cross-cultural collaboration, production, and appropriation occurring in the New Export Ware movement. During her visit, Ferrin visited ceramic workshops in Jingdezhen and Chongqing, where – similar to the historical model of export ware – skilled Chinese artisans, produce contemporary works for Western markets under the direction of visiting Western artists.

“After my visit to China, it was clear that this growing movement of Western artists engaging with Chinese artisans to provide works for international markets was urging a contemporary re-definition of export-ware,” says Ferrin. “It is a dynamic relationship with appropriation and collaboration occurring in both directions, and we are fortunate that we will be able to truly explore the relationship, with multiple exhibitions over the coming year.”

Ceramic art is experiencing an evolutionary leap. Economic conditions and technological advances have caused a dramatic shift in the way contemporary ceramics are conceived, designed, produced, and marketed. Ceramic Top 40 is an exhibition that emerged from the need to document this defining time in contemporary ceramics. Taking a snapshot of this pivotal transition provides a look back at recent history, an understanding of these forces of change, and a glimpse into the future of ceramic art.

This survey exhibition features work by individual artists, collaborators, and design partners who are working on the cutting edge of current processes, ideas, and presentation concepts in conceptual utilitarian and sculptural ceramics. They are responding to the external forces of a changing world and, in turn, shaping those influences.

EXPOSED: Heads, Busts, and Nudes is an exhibition of figural ceramic sculpture from 1965 to the present and features masterworks from estates and private collections alongside recent work direct from artist studios, which was originally presented at 1315 MASS MoCA Way, North Adams, MA, from June 18 to September 5, 2016.

This group of noted American and British sculptors explores themes that range from social realism to otherworldly surrealism to abstraction of form. The overview illustrates how early practitioners in California’s Bay Area during in the 1960s and 1970s, such as Robert Arneson, Viola Frey, and Stephen De Staebler, continue to inspire artists today. Known for their use of clay in combination with painted glaze surfaces, these artists challenge presumptions and their work defies easy categorization as sculpture, decorative arts, or studio craft.

The exhibit that took place at Ferrin Contemporary’s gallery in western Massachusetts presents a selection of available works by living and deceased artists featured in the accompanying catalog EXPOSED: Heads, Busts, and Nudes. The publication includes an introduction by curator Leslie Ferrin and an informative essay by author and independent curator Mark Leach highlighting the seminal moments and interplay between artists and their mentors.
