Ferrin Contemporary is proud to present new works from internationally renowned sculptor Sergei Isupov. SERGEI ISUPOV: ALLIANCES

Isupov’s artworks form alliances with one another as they move between media, explore scale, and are presented in curated exhibitions. Recent opportunities to create public works like his fire sculpture production and performances, along with solo exhibitions that show the full scope of Isupov’s creative versatility and process, have led to new works on paper, prints and wall installations combining ceramics with other materials.

The Heckscher Museum of Art and Planting Fields Foundation have jointly published the first book about nationally recognized artist Courtney M. Leonard (Shinnecock, b. 1980). It represents both the retrospective exhibition COURTNEY M. LEONARD: Logbook 2004-2023 on view at The Heckscher Museum, and her site-specific installation at Planting Fields, BREACH: Logbook 2023|Root. The pages are filled with insights into Leonard’s sources of inspiration, creative processes, and original interpretations.

The 45-page softcover publication has a foreword by Shavonne F. Smith, Tribal Member, Environmental Director, Shinnecock Indian Nation, with prefaces by Gina J. Wouters, Ph.D., President & CEO of the Planting Fields Foundation, and Heather Arnet, Executive Director & CEO, The Heckscher Museum. Heckscher Museum Curator, Karli Wurzelbacher, Ph.D., engages Leonard in an insightful Q&A focused on the Museum’s retrospective exhibition. Emily Leger, Collections and Exhibitions Manager at Planting Fields, writes about Leonard’s site-specific installation. The book contains many beautiful color photographs of the artist’s exquisite artwork.

Structure/Dissonance celebrates nearly five decades of work by New York-based artist Raymon Elozua, who first came to prominence in the 1970s with detailed trompe l’oeil ceramic sculptures of decaying industrial landscapes. Elozua’s first major museum exhibition since his 2003 retrospective at the Mint Museum, Structure/Dissonance focuses on three conceptual bodies of work that explore the combined physical properties of three elemental materials: ceramic, glass, and steel. This exhibition contextualizes these vital sculptures within Elozua’s intellectual landscape through the inclusion of a series of collections and research projects that are inextricably linked to his artistic output.

Excerpt from Maria Porges Essay:

All of Morey’s therianthropes have a kind of contained power, even when their poses might bely such a reading. A closer examination of the passive contrapposto of the standing figures in Three Gracesreveals a kind of watchful alertness. Positioned back to back around a tree stump, they are warriors creating a united defense. Rhino and mountain lion have their arms intertwined, but the gesture looks protective rather than girlishly affectionate. Alert, all three scan the horizon, dependent on each other for safety. As Morey has put it, “The rhino, mountain lion and human are all in danger of habitat loss, and extinction- although the human is just now realizing how delicate her situation is, and how dependent she is on the well -being of the creatures and environments around her.”

Like these three, Morey reminds us, all living creatures are connected. Multiple-figure compositions– a first for her—have enabled her to address increasingly complex issues. The result is a body of work in which several different meanings can be slowly unpacked, even as the immediate physical appeal of the figures provides pleasure. “You can come in at whatever level you want, but hopefully it will make you think about something you haven’t previously considered
 I don’t know if this work will make a change, but I hope it instigates a conversation.”

An exploration of the impact and importance of printed tablewares, now making a comeback. The new artwork reflects a significant cultural impact around the world. Horizon melds historical enquiry with contemporary practice.

In the early nineteenth century, printed tablewares formed part of the new media of the age. Together with patterned textiles and wallpapers they assimilated, then disseminated the constructs of landscape imagery making the previously exclusive available to many. Printed tablewares played a significant role in the democratisation of artistic imagery as well as the development of cultural and national identities. Eventually, as newer media forms began to supersede the vitrified print, meaning became diluted, so that the genre eventually reached obsolescence and kitsch.

Today there is a growing interest in this undervalued material from collectors, curators, museologists and contemporary artists who reference and celebrate the genre. The new artwork is international in nature, reflecting the significant cultural impact printed transferwares had as they were produced and exported around the world. Melding historical enquiry with contemporary practice, the book illustrates how artists re-appropriate this historical genre to observe, record, comment and re-animate.
