ABOUT By Design: The Enduring Shaker Legacy

on view May 24 – November 1, 2020 at Hancock Shaker Village, Pittsfield, MA

Hancock Shaker Village presents an exhibition highlighting the finest examples of Shaker craftsmanship alongside works by contemporary designers and makers whose practices speak to Shaker aesthetics and ideals. A featured component of By Design is Gregg Moore: Bread-and-Butter Shaker, an installation of work by Philadelphia-based artist Gregg Moore that explores the relationship between farms, food, and ceramics. A butter churn of black porcelain, plates textured with the impressions of grazing livestock, and 52 translucent bone china cups displayed on a Shaker trestle table—works in view illustrating Moore’s ongoing investigation into the ways that ceramic techniques and forms have evolved in tandem with regional agricultural operations and culinary practices. The title, Bread-and-Butter Shaker, is a nod to the abundant meals served by the Shakers in the 19th century—a crucial tool for recruiting temporary converts, or “bread-and-butter” Shakers. Too, Moore’s work draws reference to the agrarian history of Hancock Shaker Village, which was supported by its dairy industry and led to the construction of a number of buildings, including the iconic Round Stone Barn.
