In Mid - March I crossed the Mississippi in Memphi

In Mid - March I crossed the Mississippi in Memphis heading West on a month long X-Country tour to visit family, friends and amazing national parks. This was a long awaited trip to retrace footsteps - both my own and others shared with my mother June. Planning it had been one of the things we would imagine during her four year decline coinciding with pandemic restricted travel. While on the road, I took lots of pictures but time in person was precious and internet inconsistent. BUT there are lots of great photos posted in real time by my companion @russell__biles

The nature of the trip meant that we couldn’t stop at every museum in every town we passed through - something that I might still like to do - BUT we did make an exception in Little Rock, Arkansas to see @arkmfa

“The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts” has undergone a major transformation of its building and grounds in Little Rock. Through revitalizing existing structures and uniting them with a “blossoming central addition, Studio Gang’s design creates a 133,000 square foot building that embraces the surrounding city and park and establishes a bold new architectural identity. The Museum’s historic 1937 Art Deco façade is returned to its original role as the building’s north entrance. The central addition, with its organic curves and pleated roof, creates a complementary, park-side entrance at the south and establishes a light-filled, connective space that intuitively guides guests into AMFA’s Harriet and Warren Stephens Galleries, Windgate Art School, Performing Arts Theater, Cultural Living Room, Museum Store, and restaurant.“

PETER PINCUS at the ARKANSAS MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS - 2/2

Looking back to 2020 during the height of the pandemic, when Peter Pincus’s exhibition at @ferrincontemporary “Art in the Age of Influence: Peter Pincus | Sol Lewitt” opened - neither he, nor the the gallery knew what to expect of our futures. Now, four years later, we are proud to see the featured work from that exhibition on view and in the permanent collection of @arkmfa.

Curator Brian Lang sought out this work while still imagining the new galleries that were yet to be designed, part of a major transformation of building and grounds of @arkmfa in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Peter Pincus “A Familiar Kind of Riddle”, 2018 - colored porcelain and luster mounted on wood - it “contains twelve hundred porcelain tiles … To make this work, Pincus first created a CAD drawing, which was then used to create a three-dimensional printed prototype. From that, he produced porcelain tiles with a press-mold, fired and sanded them, then mounted them on a wood panel support.”

Pincus’s work is presented in dialog with other masterworks by sculptors Toshiko Takaezu, John Mason, Jun Kaneko and a recent acquisition by Raven Halfmoon.

ARKANSAS MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS - on a recent visit,

ARKANSAS MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS - on a recent visit, curators Brian Lang and Jennifer Jankauskas gave director, Leslie Ferrin @leslieferrin a long awaited tour of the museum and the new addition, part of a major transformation of building and grounds of @arkmfa in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Over the past few years, from afar, we’ve been seeing the collection grow with support from generous artists, collectors and donors.

Beautifully presented and organized in spacious, light filled galleries, we share a couple of highlights in two posts and our stories.

Beth Lipman “Laid Table with Bird, Goblet, and Fruit” 2006 - 2023 - to commemorate the grand re-opening of AMFA, the Museum commissioned Lipman to enhance the original composition. She fabricated a painted wood table, which enables the sculpture to be freed fully in the round; and made additional blown glass elements, such as the platter of fish, a bowl with ice, and assorted vessels and stemware. It is central to a room with historic portraits, still life paintings and other related objects.

Selected works in the permanent collection include Steven Young Lee’s “Diptych, Eagles”, 2013 acquired from the estate of Candice Groot who purchased them from a solo exhibition at Greenwich House Pottery @greenwichhousepottery

The collection presents objects in the open, allowing visitors to see surface and form without distracting reflections. The objects are in dialog with one another, showing relationships to practice, technique and material while surveying the history of contemporary studio craft and its relation to fine art both present and past.

THANK YOU NCECA 2024!

Last week, Ferrin Contemporary traveled from Massachusetts to Richmond, Virginia to participate in Coalescence: NCECA 2024. Staff members Alexandra Jelleberg & Isabel Twanmo offered tours of Ferrin Contemporary’s exhibition, Our America/Whose America? in the Wickham House at the Valentine, and were later joined by Our America/Whose America? artists Connor Czora, Michelle Erickson, and Kevin Snipes for a “Meet The Artists” event in the Wickham House. During the course of the week, over 2000 educators, students, artists, curators and collectors attending the conference explored the historic house and other exhibitions at the Valentine. Thank you to all the Valentine staff, docents and everyone involved with NCECA for your hard work and support!

If you weren’t able to visit during the conference Our America/Whose America? will remain on view in the Wickham House through April 21st, 2024. ARE THEY THERE YET? 10 days ago @massmocaunion went on strike - today they go back to the negotiating table with @massmoca to settle the strike.

The creative economy is only sustainable if artists and artworkers are paid a living wage. It is a fragile, complex, interrelated, symbiotic system that combines wages, long hours, volunteers, interns and tax paying employment to make it possible for artists to create, exhibit, present their work in public spaces AND offer it for sale.

@ferrincontemporary , a commercial art gallery, thrived for 9 years on the MM campus based in Building 13 a member of the community that surrounds the museum.

We employed former museum staff, hosted interns from MCLA and Williams College. We watched the economic development imbedded into all the funding support take root with our neighbors both on and off the campus. MM is the mother ship, the staff keeps it afloat. We could not have thrived without them to fabricate, install, maintain, greet, inform, publicize the incredible exhibitions, performances and events created at MM.

Many often work more than one job to make ends meet, live locally, produce their work as creative artists & art professionals. They provide the year round staffing the ecosystem of related businesses and depend on them to succeed.

What starts at MM doesn’t always stay there but that’s what an incubator does for a community.

On Wednesday, March 20th 2024, join Ferrin Contemporary staff @alexandra_renee_j and @isabel_mai_ for guided tours of the exhibition at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm. Tours are free with museum admission, and free for NCECA attendees.

Beth Lipman - “Adeline’s Portal” at the Mose

Beth Lipman - “Adeline’s Portal” at the Moses Myers House in Norfolk, VA - “You stand in the bedroom once occupied by Adeline Myers (1791-1832), the oldest daughter of Moses and Eliza Myers. The objects in this room and throughout the Myers’s House are arranged to provide an accurate impression of daily life for Adeline and her family in the early 1800’s … the Moses Myers House, like every house museum, is simultaneously authentic and artificial.”

Curated by Alex Mann, Brock Curator of American Art at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, VA, this artwork is in the permanent collection.

This stop along the way to Richmond was prompted by a visit to the Chrysler Museum. This post focuses on a site responsive work by Beth Lipman that launched the Resident Artist in Response program at the Perry Glass Studio and was made with assistance from Liesl Schubert and the Glass Studio Team during her residency there. It was acquired with funds provided by the Friends of Historic Houses.

The late Federal period house and collection was built by a prosperous Jewish early American entrepreneur. Five generations of Myers family lived in the Moses Myers House from 1795-1931. From the beginning the family served in local government and patronized the after and the arts.

Beth’s installation is adjacent to the “Hyphen” a room that was shared by enslaved people. The primary source documents include names of every person who lived in the house. “Their lives and contributions are important and deserve to be remembered”. - quotes from text panels.

Courtney M. Leonard’s work is on view in an exhi

Courtney M. Leonard’s work is on view in an exhibition organized by the Gilcrease Museum that is on view at the Ackland Art Museum.

I made a few detours on my roadtrip to Richmond to see works by artists in museums. I always learn something from the way an exhibition is organized and the information provided in the “tombstones”. A few highlights in this post, more in stories.

1. Courtney M. Leonard, Shinnecock Nation- “Artifice (Eillipse) | Log:18-1 | 2016 was a gift of Loren Lipson to the Gilcrease - a generous donor, he supported numerous artists and gave works to institutions throughout the US at the time of his death. Courtney's work greets viewers in a room of objects and paintings in the exhibition “Past Forward: Native American Art from Gilcrease Museum.” Courtney asks us with her worrk “Can a culture sustain itself when it no longer has access to the environment that fashioned that culture?”

2. Painted buffalo hide by an unidentified Cheyenne maker circa 1880 depicting the defeat of US Army soldiers at the hands of Southern Cheyenne men.

3. "For John Ridge", 1976 painting by by Kay WalkingStick, Cherokee Nation. In 1835 Ridge signed the treaty of New Echota, ceding tribal lands east of the Mississippi to the US and led to the removal of 15000 Cherokee to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) and the Trail of Tears.

3. “Caddo Bottle”, 2019 - Jeri Redcorn, Caddo/Potawatoni

5. “Thomas Gilcrease” portrait by Charles Banks Wilson - the Gilcrease Museum was founded in 1949 by Tulsa oilman who amassed the nation’s most comprehensive collection of art of the American West, historic documents and artifacts.

Originally shown at Ferrin Contemporary in 2022, OUR AMERICA/WHOSE AMERICA? was organized as a call and response between Leslie Ferrin’s collection of historic objects - plates, souvenirs and figurines from England, Occupied Japan, and USA manufacturers - and contemporary ceramicists.

The 2024 iteration of OUR AMERICA/WHOSE AMERICA? continues the conversation, while focusing attention on stories about Virginia both during the Colonial period and as the capital of the Confederacy during the civil war.

The artists’ contemporary works, all produced in the last decade, were conceived of and reference several recent protest movements that took place and are taking place in Virginia and throughout America. The works include specific references to race, gender, class, the environment, warfare, and food/water inequity of the present moment, becoming “souvenirs” of our time with contemporary imagery and social commentary.

On International Woman’s Day - we highlight the

CONNOR CZORA joined us in Richmond at @thevalentinerva and spoke about their work during the preview of OUR AMERICA/WHOSE AMERICA? Jeff Vick @jvceramics at @visartsrva, one of the onsite coordinators for NCECA Richmond @nceca.rva held a “torch” as we toured the exhibition.

CZORA - artist, activist and director of District Clay @districtclaycenter and @districtclaygallery - is showing three of his series of Trenton Vases that commemorate protests in DC during BLM and the pandemic using the form of the Trenton Vase. Originally produced for the Worlds Fair in 1904 - at 4 feet tall, these extraordinary vases represented American industrial and technical achievement - read more about Trenton Potteries Company, the Monumental Vases from the Potteries of Trenton NJ Society, how they were lost and found again.

“The Trenton Potteries Company made four highly-decorated monumental vases for the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. Decorated by the French ceramic artist Anton Lucien Boullemier, the vases had a distinctive French design, and were a testament to the talent in Trenton.

Pictured [in post] is the Trenton Vase, [featuring Washington Crossing the Delaware] in the collection of the New Jersey State Museum. The Newark Museum is home to the Grecian Vase, the Brooklyn Museum has the Rose Vase, and the Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie owns the Woodland Vase.”

OUR AMERICA/WHOSE AMERICA? is officially now open

OUR AMERICA/WHOSE AMERICA? is officially now open in the Wickham House at the Valentine in Richmond, VA through April 21 featuring works by 20 contemporary artists whose work in ceramic explores social issues and cultural identity.

This exhibition was organized as a call and response to my collection of historic material - plates, souvenirs and figurines. Artists were invited to submit and create new works in conversation with commercially produced ceramics from England, Occupied Japan and USA manufacturers. This latest iteration of the show focuses attention on stories about Virginia both during the colonial period and as the capital of the confederacy during the civil war. The exhibition is installed on period furniture throughout the first floor of a former enslaver’s home, one of three exhibitions currently on view at the Valentine museum exploring the meaning behind historic narratives related to Richmond. An exhibition specifically dealing with the sculptor, Edward Valentine and historic evidence of how art was used to reframe the reality of the Civil War is currently on view at the Valentine Studio “Sculpting History at the Valentine Studio: Art Power and the ‘Lost Cause’ American Myth.

For those who plan to attend the NCECA conference in 2024, taking place nearby at the convention center in mid-March, the Valentine is a short walk.

Originally curated and presented @ferrincontemporary in North Adams, MA in 2022, selected works were chosen by co-curators Stephanie Plunkett and Robyn Phillips Pendleton for their extraordinary exhibition “Imprinted: Illustrating Race” at Norman Rockwell Museum. The keynote panel I moderated, “Hidden in Plain Sight: Ceramics and American Identity” was part of a day long symposium with talks by artists, collectors and curators examining issues regarding race in illustration. ARTIST NEWS | Courtney M. Leonard Exhibition Opening

Courtney M. Leonard’s, “BREACH: Logbook 24: STACCATO now on view.

BREACH: LOGBOOK 24 | STACCATO is the result of a multi-year artist residency initiated by the UMCA in collaboration with the UMass College of Natural Sciences and partially funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. The installation will fill the UMCA’s Main, East and West Galleries. It includes paiuuntings, sculptures, and video exploring the life and kinship ties of Staccato, a North Atlantic Right Whale killed by a ship strike in 1999, whose remains are housed in the UMass Natural History Collections.

THE SHAPE OF TIME | Korean Art after 1989 - This is the last weekend to see this extraordinary exhibition in Philadelphia BUT it is traveling to Minneapolis, opening mid March.

At the end of January, I had the opportunity to follow Elisabeth Agro and her co- curators Hyunsoo Woo with Taeyi Kim during a study day to learn more about the project that she first told me about ten years ago. Having traveled to Korea in 2016 (thanks to an invitation from our friend Hyeyoung Cho - I had personal memories to draw upon.

My USO visit to the DMZ was stunning then and haunts me to this day, still closed to humans due to the hundreds of exposed land mines and political divide. Three artists in the exhibition, who are - like scientists - inspired to consider and imagine the implications of what is going on in the heavily mined 2.5 mile divide since the armistice in 1953 - Hayoun Kwon’s VR video “489 Years” is narrated by one soldier’s story of being on patrol, the composed photo “Eulji Theater” by Yeondoo Jung (also cover of catalog) is a parody of the observation deck and the sculptured imaginary plants that start with wood canes by Minouk Lim in her series “Portable Keeper” - (look in stories for more images).

I’m quoting the catalog intro to the exhibition - Shape of Time “includes artists who are established and well known in South Korea, some with an international following, and others who have not yet been properly introduced to audiences beyond Korea ... The thirty artworks included [in the exhibition] reflect the complexities of the rapid urbanization and industrialization that shaped the material and intellectual landscapes of South Korea, the unresolved political tension with North Korea and its impact on the daily lives of the Korean people, the pressure to conform to societal norms surrounding gender and sexuality.

Ulysses Grant Dietz - I began my long road trip with a short but conversation filled visit with my good friend and colleague Ulysses - @ulysses_grant_dietz

Ulysses retired as chief curator and over 40+ years decorative arts curator (and a few other important roles) at the @newarkmuseumart - he was preparing for a few upcoming talks - not exactly retired. We’ve been comparing notes and working together since we first met during the exhibition he curated in 2003 “Great Pots: Contemporary Ceramics from Function to Fantasy.”

On my ride South, I am listening to podcasts about Grant/Lee/Confederacy/Civil War/Monuments/Lost Cause - all in preparation for the exhibition we are presenting in Richmond, VA in the Wickham House at @thevalentinerva - “Our America/Whose America?” - first presented at @ferrincontemporary in 2022 it is being reconfigured for the period house. Opening February 21, it is onview through April 21. Special events and tours are planned during the @nceca conference in March taking place at the nearby convention center. Justin Rothshank’s work will take over the dining room with 16 places settings of 8 presidents from that era and a new series of 8 commemorating important figures from that time period - “A People’s Dinnerware”. Selected works related to Virginia and works in the exhibition from my collection of commercially produced plates and figurines, vintage and antiques will be on view. I think I need to add a Kehinde Wiley next.

With each installation and exhibition, Leonard draws on knowledge, experience and her personal Indigenous perspective. These works are composed and presented in interdisciplinary media that use metaphor and abstraction to illustrate consequences of social policies from historic to present. Color, form and multiple object compositions allude to land, water and the cultural landscape in the regions where she is engaged in collaborations.

In 2024, Leonard’s recent work is being featured in exhibitions that open at galleries and museums in New York and Massachusetts. In addition, works in numerous permanent public collections of American art are on view throughout the US. It’s been my pleasure and honor to work with Courtney M. Leonard since we first met in 2021. With each opportunity, Courtney greeted the challenges with fierce determination and dedication while balancing her art practice, family and teaching responsibilities. Starting with research, each artwork weaves layers of detail, metaphor and abstraction to draw people to see the world based in her personal experience.

Craft Across Continents - Contemporary Japanese and Western Objects: The Lassiter/Ferraro Collection featuring over 50 objects collected over 25 years. I loved seeing all the warmth of friends coming together to celebrate and reminisce, share object stories about the works and when and where they were made and collected. Russell Biles’ “The Passion of Andy” is a special one to me, it was acquired from our gallery in 2004 with support from the Lassiter/Ferraros, The Founders Circle, and from me & Donald Clark. The work explored so many issues that are even more relevant today than they were 20 years ago. (See next post for details). Each work in the collection, carefully chosen and lived with, shared with friends during so many social events in their homes are in this exhibition, document in a beautiful catalog with essays by curators Annie Carlano and Rebecca Elliot … Thank you Gary and Lorne for leadership, support and generosity over all these years.

ON VIEW: Jacqueline Bishop’s “Market Woman Story” at the Williams College Museum of Art

“In this set of fifteen dishes, I am both paying homage to the market woman – centering her importance to Caribbean society from the period of slavery onwards – placing her within a critical context. In particular, I place the market woman within a long tradition of female labor depicted in diverse imagery that I have sourced online, including early Jamaican postcards, paintings of enslaved women from Brazil, the colonial paintings of the Italian Agostino Brunias, and present-day photographs, which I collage alongside floral and abolitionist imagery.”

More on the gallery exhibition:
Some objects in the gallery indirectly address the legacies of British colonialism: the mahogany chest of drawers exemplifies the extractive lumber industry that was sustained by enslaved laborers in the Caribbean, and the nearby silver egg server is a representation of transnational economic relationships that became essential to the British occupation of present-day India. Jacqueline Bishop’s The Market Woman’s Story, however, confronts colonialism head on. In collaboration with British ceramicist Emma Price, Bishop explores the power dynamics exemplified in the trade and migrational routes between the United Kingdom and Jamaica. Ceramic plates featuring digital collages of images sourced from postcards of Jamaica, 18th-century European paintings, contemporary photographs, and abolitionist imagery place the market woman and the history of British colonialism in the Caribbean in a new critical context.
