Mark Shapiro

Handmade pottery exploded in America after WWII. Studio potters, in dialogue with clay and fire, produced objects that embodied their unique individual voices, while serving as vessels for everyday sustenance. Studio pots bring the sublime to the daily activity of eating and drinking. This talk will explore how the Donald Clark Collection illuminates the rise of the Studio Pottery movement as well as pottery’s dynamic presence in the local culture of the Connecticut River Valley.

Presented by Mark Shapiro, potter, writer, mentor, director of Apprenticelines, and founding member of POW! (Pots on Wheels)

SIN-YING HO: PAST FORWARD on view at HOOD DOWNTOWN

SIN-YING HO: PAST FORWARD

March 30–May 27, 2018
Hood Downtown, Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth, Hanover, NH

Opening with the artist: Friday, April 6, 5–7pm
“Conversations and Connections” discussion with
Hood Director, John Stomberg and Sin-ying Ho: Saturday, April 7, 2–3pm

If Chinese ceramic art has a heart, it beats in Jingdezhen. For centuries, artisans there have made vessels that traveled far and wide. Their fluid forms and recognizable decorations have inspired celebratory prose and devoted followers around the world. Today, artist Sin-ying Ho works in these same ceramics factories. Though Jingdezhen potters have long defined tradition, Ho has expanded both their forms and their imagery in contemporary ceramics that are thoroughly of the twenty-first century.
